21st annual Les Schwab Portland To Coast High School Challenge

PTC High School Challenge is the Largest High School Running Relay in the world!

DATES: August 24-25, 2018
TOTAL TEAMS: 50 teams of 12 runners (minimum 8)
RACE COURSE: PTC is 130 miles long. See Course Maps for more about the route.
TOTAL PARTICIPANTS: The 2018 event will include 600 runners and 3,600 volunteers
MOVIE: On 1/11/11 The Hood To Coast Movie premiered in theaters across the country, documenting the story of four teams, their lives and their journies to complete the race

Start Summary

The High School Challenge Start is located at the Eastbank Festival Plaza, adjacent to the Hawthorne Bridge! (Nearest address is: 20 SE Madison St, Portland, OR 97214). 

  • There will be one start wave at 6:30PM.
  • We are always on schedule, don't be late!
  • Stongly suggested to only bring one team vehicle to the start area
  • The 2nd vehicle should go directly to 'Exchange 18' 
  • Be aware of participants already on the course as you enter the Start area
Team Check-in Procedures

One representative from each team is required for check-in; does not need to be Team Captain.

1) Present team safety equipment for inspection at the Equipment Check-in area 20 min. prior to Start Time

  • Two (2) reflective vests
  • Two (2) LED lights/flashers
  • Two (2) flashlights or headlamps

2) State your team number to Race Officials

3) Sign next to your team name on the official check-in sheet

Upon check-in, your team will be issued the current year Race Wrist Wrap. Without your Race Wrist Wrap and approval of Safety Equipment, teams will not be permitted to start.

Out-of-town teams
  • Receive race numbers, race shirts and vehicle identification signs at Start Check-in area
  • Arrive 45 min in advance of team start time to collect necessary materials and check-in

Located on the beach, just north of the Broadway Avenue turnaround in Seaside, Oregon.

  • Anticipate potential traffic delays.
  • PTC provides FREE shuttle bus service in Seaside with designated parking areas for teams! Please use it. Click for Seaside Parking Map
Finishing as a team

Teammates often cross the Finish Line with their "anchor" who is officially finishing the race. If your team chooses to do so, make sure:

  • Your Leg 36 "anchor" runner leads your team to the Finish Line
  • Listen for announcements of team members arriving near the finish
  • The Leg 36 runner will be the only one to remove the timing chip and be credited with an official finish.
Award Ceremony
  • Main Stage area at Finish party on the beach
  • Awards will be given to the top 4 teams in each category.

  • The Race Survey is the basis for calculation of all teams' anticipated finish times and start times.
  • The race time survey will request that you enter a time trial or previous “best” race time. Taking into account a multitude of factors, HTC/PTC has a formula that converts this time into what you could expect to average for all legs during the relay.

3) Scroll down to 'Race Time Survey' and click on 'Update Race Time'

  • Plastic recycling receptacles at ALL Exchanges, as well as Start and Finish Areas!
  • Handbooks printed on post-consumer recycled paper.

  • Use of biodegradable plates/utensils at Finish Area Food Garden and catering.
  • All race bibs are recycle-friendly!
  • Donation of past season merchandise, race and volunteer shirts.

Bring a reusable water bottle and large gallon water container to refill and reduce waste!
